CHAPTER FIVE

ROBYN WAS BUZZING. Her skin and lips were on fire, her brain couldn’t stop firing either. Now she was sleeping in a perfectly peaceful apartment, it wasn’t noisy deliveries to the hospital kitchen that were keeping her awake.

Yesterday had been one of the best, and one of the worst moments in her personal and professional life. And the weirdest part was, how all those pieces intertwined.

The arrest call had been devastating. Robyn could admit to herself how absolutely overwhelmed with panic she’d actually felt. She’d looked at the young woman lying on the emergency trolley and imagined herself, and every one of her friends, being that person.

There had been a real element of luck involved yesterday. The pulmonary embolism diagnosis had been pure instinct. But she could have been wrong. And if she had been, she wasn’t sure what might have happened—except the certainty that Mabel would have died.

Avery had been the calmest man on the planet. The few times he’d caught her gaze she could almost hear him whispering next to her. You’ve got this. His calm nature gave her confidence in her decision-making, and she was so glad he’d been there.

Dr Shad inviting her into his theatre was, for any junior doctor, a dream come true. She’d had to will her hands not to shake, and her brain had tried to absorb every movement, every conversation, every technique she’d witnessed. She’d be processing this for days.

Then, there was the last part. The part that involved Avery Smith.

She was lying in her bed and just thinking about him made her skin prickle. The adrenaline had been running through her system so much at the time. She could remember the total exhaustion hitting her, plus the overwhelming emotions of the day, as she’d walked down that hospital corridor. Feeling Avery’s arms around her had first been welcoming, then enticing.

She’d been conscious of the vibe between them—she just wasn’t sure she was reading it correctly. Of course, he was handsome. Of course, he teased and flirted. He was nicknamed Mr Sunshine after all. There had been the looks. The atmosphere between them when they’d had dinner. His casual suggestion that he show her around the city. The offer of his spare room. And the building attraction between them now that they were under one roof.

But the one thing she was sure she’d read correctly was the connection between them and the kiss from yesterday. It had definitely been real. It had definitely been reciprocated. She hadn’t flung herself at him. It had been a mutual meeting.

They’d both appeared back on the intensive cardiac unit. But all focus had had to be on Mabel and supporting her family. Robyn had had to stop her mind drifting back to the kiss and concentrate on the complicated regime of blood tests and drugs that Mabel would need for the rest of that day, and for the next few weeks. She’d been happy to stay late and take notes. Learning was why she was here.
